Safety Inspections

Inspections are classified in three levels, each tailored to the specific appliance and venting system.

Level 1 inspection: This inspection is recommended for chimneys that are in continuous service under the same conditions. It can include routine cleaning of the flue and direct replacement of a similar appliance.

Level 2 inspection: This inspection is required when any changes are made to the systems, such as after a sale or transfer of property, an accident or external event like damaging weather, or when an operating malfunction or external event is suspected to have caused damage to the chimney. It also covers additions or removals of connected appliances, replacements of appliances with different types, input rating or efficiencies, and prior to relining or replacement of the flue lining.

Level 3 inspection: This inspection combines the requirements of Level 1 and Level 2 inspections, as well as structural review. This review may involve dismantling the chimney to access concealed areas suspected of being unsafe. It is also required to when necessary for investigating incidents that have caused damage to the chimney or building, when a hazard is detected or suspected, after a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection and cannot be fully evaluated without access to concealed areas, or when the construction of all or part of the chimney is deemed critical to the renewed or continued use of the chimney due to potential concealed defects.
